Muthien previously served as Chief Executive – Group Services at Sanlam, Executive Director of Sanlam Ltd, as well as a Non-Executive Director of Santam, Sanlam Investments, and Sanlam Investment Management. She was previously Vice President of Public Affairs & Communications for Coca-Cola Africa based in London, and Group Executive Corporate Affairs for the MTN Group Ltd. She formerly served as a Non-Executive Director for Aurecon, Sentech, MTN Nigeria, Mossgas, the SABC and Transnet.
She completed her D.Phil. degree in Sociology and Politics at Oxford University (UK) and holds an MA from Northwestern University (USA) as well as a BA and a BA (Hons) cum laude from the University of the Western Cape. She serves as Chairperson of the President’s Advisory Council on National Orders under President Zuma, having served Presidents Motlanthe, Mbeki and Mandela in the same capacity. In Dec 2002, she was bestowed with a Presidential Award as Grand Counsellor of the Order of Baobab, by then President, Thabo Mbeki.
