By Irene Basson
Behind the festive mayhem of the holidays, safety hazards lurk. Being aware of common safety measures during this busy time of year is key, especially when you are away. Make sure that you do not invite criminals into your home by followings these simple steps:
1. Ensure that your alarm is set and that your electric fence and security cameras (if you have these) are in working condition.
2. If you have a security company, let them know that you are going away.
3. Take your valuable items with you or put them away in your safe. Make sure that your safe is out of sight and locked.
4. If possible. Lock away expensive electrical appliances like decoder, remotes and computers.
5. Switch off your geyser and if you are away for a long time clear your fridge and defrost it before you go.
6. Close all your windows properly and check that all your doors and security gates are locked.
7. Make sure you tell either a family member or a neighbour about your travels. However, be wary of the amount of information you share on Social Media about your travels especially regarding to the duration.
8. If you have newspapers that are delivered to your house ask someone to collect these for you so that it does not look like there is no one at home.
9. If you have pets make sure they’re dropped off with someone responsible.
10. If you are going on vacation for a long period of time, make sure someone like a friend or relative has access to your house and ask them to visit the house every now and again so that there is regular movement and activity.
11. Do not cancel your garden service or ask someone you know to maintain the garden while you are away.
12. Install a timer so that your lights are switched on and off on a regular basis.
