Club Travel celebrates the spirit of 67 Minutes for Mandela
“Hunger is not an issue of charity, it is an issue of injustice,” said the late Nelson Mandela. The iconic former president gave 67 years of his life fighting for human rights, ending hunger and eradicating poverty. Inspired by Tata Madiba’s legacy and his efforts towards improving the living conditions of all South Africans, Club Travel celebrated Mandela Day 2016 by donating non-perishable food to seniors in disadvantaged areas.
In the fight to reduce hunger, our senior citizens are often forgotten. Club Travel nominated Ekuphumleni Frail and Aged Care Home in Gugulethu, Cape Town and Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home in Alexandra, Johannesburg as the chosen beneficiaries. Staff members contributed by donating non-perishable foods, along with bulk orders purchased through our CSI initiative, Club Cares.
Staff members made the delivery in both Cape Town and Johannesburg over lunch time on Friday, 15 July.
Ms Nokongama Matiwane from Ekuphumleni Frail and Aged Care Home in Gugulethu said, “We are so blessed to receive this donation. We will be sure to have a special lunch on Mandela Day to celebrate not only his legacy, but also the amazing contribution Club Travel has made to our centre”.
“There is a great need, especially where the elderly are concerned. The experience today in Alexandra was not only humbling to our entire team, but also uplifting to see how grateful the staff and residents were for the donation”, said Lindi Chiya, Club Travel Corporate Account Management Director in Gauteng.
